Genesis made it to the list with two very different, yet very similar rides. As part of its ambitious plan to sell only EVs by 2030, it has added two new models — the Electrified GV70 crossover and Electrified G80 sedan — the Electrified part of the name is passé plus! The key to both is they marry a rewarding drive with a feature rich interior. What’s different is the two are based on the gas-powered model. Many suggest it takes a dedicated EV platform to deliver the best efficiency and range; these two (and the BMW iX M40) prove that’s not necessarily the case.
The GV70 is powered by a 77.4-kWh battery and two electric motors. The layout delivers all-wheel-drive along with a healthy 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The plus is the Boost button on the steering wheel bumps the output to 483 hp for up to 10 seconds, so there’s no shortage of performance.
Through a corner, the Electrified GV70 actually feels more planted than its gas-powered counterpart because the battery lowers the centre of gravity. Yes, it feels heavy, but the adaptive suspension delivers a better balance between a luxurious ride and roll control. The steering is, likewise, commendable in the feel and feedback it delivers.
The GV70’s cabin is first class. From the Nappa leather to the 14.5-inch touchscreen for the multimedia system, it’s a cut above. The key is the large free-standing screen gives all of the functions more breathing space. It also houses the best range readout around. For the family there’s lots of rear seat room for three adults along with 813L of cargo space with the seats up and 1,601L when folded.
